Remove the Confederate Flag From the State Capitol
Forty-five years ago I arrived as an eighteen year old college freshman on the University of South Carolina Columbia Campus. I grew up in Virginia
which is the capital of the Confederacy so I was very familiar with the Civil War and the history surrounding it. I did not find it strange that the Confederate flag flew atop our State House. Over time as our society has evolved, I have long sense been of
the conclusion that the flag should be removed from the State House grounds. Out of the horrible tragedy in Charleston I have witnessed something that brought tears to my eyes on Monday during Governor Haley’s 4 PM press conference. There is now a concerted
united movement to remove the flag from the State House grounds and put it in or around the Confederate relic museum room which is where it belongs in my humble opinion.

I am very aware of the fact that the Stars and Bars is part of our heritage in South Carolina, but it is offensive to many of my friends and colleagues and as Governor Haley said, “The
State House belongs to all of us and the flag needs to come down.”
