KellyGram – Greetings from Myrtle Beach!

With three offices across South Carolina, I have always traveled regularly for work, but that is true now more so than ever. Mike Kelly Law Group’s Myrtle Beach practice has been bringing in more and more clients seeking help in the areas of personal injury, workers’ comp, and Social Security disability—so much so that I now spend as much time working in the Myrtle Beach office as I do our main office in Columbia!

Because Myrtle Beach is a tourism hot-spot, the beach practice has historically drawn far more clients from out-of-state than our offices in Columbia and Winnsboro, but the growth we’ve seen lately is largely on a local scale. I attribute this, in part, to overall population growth in the area (Horry County, South Carolina is the second fastest-growing county in America!), but word-of-mouth referrals have been the primary driving force behind this boom in business.

The confidence that the people of Horry County—and folks throughout South Carolina—place in Mike Kelly Law Group is humbling and is not something which we treat lightly. A referral is an extension of one’s own reputation, and we at MKLG believe it is incumbent upon us to honor the trust of those who recommend our firm to friends, family, and colleagues by delivering exemplary legal services. If meeting that standard means more travel to Myrtle Beach, then I embrace the opportunity! Whether it’s for work or leisure, I enjoy spending time there. The salt air and coastal lifestyle are good for the soul, and there is never a dearth of exciting things to do after-hours and on the weekends—I can hear the Carolina Country Music Festival going on now! Most of all, I enjoy being part of the beach community, and I am filled with gratitude for its members and their role in making our Myrtle Beach practice a success!

Have a great weekend!

KellyGram – Welcome to the Family, Lou Ann!

I am thrilled to announce that Lou Ann Coleman has enthusiastically accepted a position as a legal assistant at Mike Kelly Law Group’s Winnsboro office! Lou Ann, a Fairfield County native, has deep roots in the community. She graduated from Columbia College, served as a teacher at Richard Winn Academy, and—like her newly adopted MKLG family—has been an active member of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce.

Her family are 4th generation Fairfield County farmers, and Lou Ann, after her late husband’s death, operated Fairfield Farms for nine years as president and CEO. Over the decades, the Coleman family has run a number of farming operations, including dairy farming, beef cattle, and now, poultry—Fairfield Farms raises 150,000 turkeys each year! Since her son took over managing the business, Lou Ann has been freed up to pursue other endeavors. And, as the proud mother of three children who have blessed her with six young grandchildren, needless to say, she stays busy!

We are more than delighted to welcome Lou Ann to the Mike Kelly Law Group family! If you’re in or around Winnsboro and have not had the pleasure of meeting Lou Ann, stop in and visit! Our office is located at 106 East Washington Street in downtown Winnsboro, and we’re open from 9am to 4pm Monday through Thursday. We love being part of the Winnsboro and Fairfield County communities, and as always, we’re here for the people of South Carolina!

Have a great weekend!

KellyGram – A Blessed Year

Tomorrow is my birthday and usually, a few days beforehand, I get in a very reflective mood–just as I am right now. With every year that God has given me the privilege of being on this earth, I become more awed by how incredibly blessed my life has been. I have been gifted with a wife and two wonderful sons who make me proud and with whom I have a close relationship, and now I have a beautiful granddaughter. In addition to my family and friends outside of work, I am blessed by the relationships I have built over the years with other lawyers, vendors, clients, and, of course, my family at Mike Kelly Law Group.

My Sister and Me – 1960

And as if that isn’t enough, I am blessed to have had the opportunity to represent thousands of people over the years who still think highly of the firm, so much so that they refer friends and family members to us.  It is though this network that Mike Kelly Law Group stays busy despite the intense and ever-growing presence of competition in all three of our markets.

For all of the reasons above, plus the blessing of good health, I consider myself to be one very lucky man.  Thank you for another wonderful year of life on earth!

Have a great weekend!

KellyGram – Fairfield Farmers & Artisans Market

As you know, I’m an enthusiastic ambassador for Columbia and Myrtle Beach, both of which I call home. But I also save a very special place in my heart for a third South Carolina town, Winnsboro in Fairfield County! Under current leadership, Winnsboro and Fairfield County are making strides to improve the quality of life for their residents, and on Saturday, under the visionary direction of County Administrator Jason Taylor, Winnsboro is launching an exciting new era with the grand opening of the new Fairfield Farmers & Artisans Market.

The market is making a move to the building at 117 East Washington Street, behind the town clock in downtown Winnsboro (and just across the street from Mike Kelly Law Group’s local office!). The facility dates back to the 1800s, when it used as a livery stable, and has been newly restored to create an event space that blends its historic charm with modern accommodations—a perfectly quaint setting for the new Farmers & Artisans Market. The grand-opening festivities begin at 9 am with the ribbon cutting and will feature, in addition to a wide array of SC vendors, live music, food trucks, classes, and door prizes. This event is not to be missed, so come join in on the fun—and be sure to drop by the Mike Kelly Law Group booth to say hello!

Have a great weekend!

KellyGram – Mother’s Day 2019

They say there is nothing more powerful than a mother’s love, and having witnessed the enormity of this power in any number of circumstances, I carry a very special place in my heart for mothers. This admiration began, of course, with my own mother, Helena Crawford Kelly, who played a vital role in my upbringing and who I loved tremendously. Although she has been gone for 13 years, her memory remains alive in me, and I still miss her each and every day.

My Mother, Helena Crawford Kelly

Currently, I am surrounded by outstanding mothers at both at home and at work. Witnessing my wife, Beverly, in her role as a mother to her daughter, Sydney, and her son, Lucas, is beautiful and endearing. She is an amazing woman in many respects, and that extends to motherhood. And within my “work family” at Mike Kelly Law Group, there are mothers to children of all ages. I could share story after story of the sacrifices these women have made and the lengths they would go to for their kids, all the while never missing a beat at work. They are modern superheroes, and one day, if they have not already, the kids of MKLG will grow to see just how incredibly cherished they are.

So here’s to all of the mothers in my life—may your Mother’s Day weekend be as wonderful as you are!

Happy Mother’s Day!

KellyGram – All Out

Very seldom do I air my political views in the KellyGram, but today I feel compelled to discuss “All Out May 1,” which I thought to be a remarkable coming-together of South Carolinians advocating for better standards in the state’s public education system. On Wednesday, over 10,000 people gathered on the State House grounds to voice their shared concerns over the General Assembly’s reluctance to invest in our state’s most precious assets—its children. For the second time this year, South Carolina’s educators took a stand on behalf of their students and their profession, rallying for higher salaries, better mental health and safety resources for students, smaller classrooms and less testing, and freedom to comment on matters of public policy without fear of retaliation.

These concerns are not new for South Carolina’s public school teachers, but they have remained unaddressed for years. Though controversial, the walkout garnered overdue attention from state legislators regarding serious deficits in our school systems and raised public awareness as to the hardships affecting our teachers. Of all the challenges our state faces, and of the innumerable demands on its resources, none is more important than ensuring that the next generation of South Carolinians is provided the best education possible. It is time for South Carolina to make education its #1 priority!

Have a great weekend!

KellyGram – Holy Week

Last Sunday—Palm Sunday—marked the beginning of both the most solemn and most joyful week for followers of Christianity: Holy Week. As a believer, this is my favorite time of year; it is the time during which we observe the steps of Jesus Christ in the days leading up to his resurrection. The final days of Holy Week are the most intense, beginning with the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday. From there, we go from the agony of the Crucifixion and the ultimate sacrifice on Good Friday to the Vigil of Easter on Holy Saturday. And on Resurrection (Easter) Sunday, we celebrate and rejoice in the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ who, through his sacrifice, gave us salvation and eternal life.

In my lifetime, I’ve participated in the ceremonious Holy Week many times, and am grateful to be experiencing it yet again this year. Over the past few days, I have spent a considerable amount of time reflecting on the sermon delivered by the Reverend Susan L. Prinz on Palm Sunday. In sum, her message was this: universally speaking, our own self-contempt is the single greatest hindrance to our personal and spiritual development. In a time where perfectionism is a societal expectation, however impractical, we have become our own worst critics, berating ourselves for every failure or shortcoming. Many of us believe that this approach is productive and that it forces us to work towards becoming better. In reality, though, this negative inner dialogue is destructive and crippling. Until we can set those messages aside and be kinder and gentler toward ourselves, we will be an insurmountable obstacle on the path of personal growth.

Specific to the context of the Holy Week and Easter, Reverend Prinz reminded the congregation that the very foundation of Christianity is the principle that God’s love for us is so profound that he sent his only son to die for our sins, bestowing upon us salvation and eternal life. In His eyes, we are precious in spite of our past, present, and even future transgressions. And in order to grow into the best versions of ourselves, we must accept and rely on that love—but we cannot accept His love until we can love ourselves.

Regardless of one’s religious or spiritual belief, Reverend Prinz’s message rings true: we must be kind to ourselves and learn to accept our imperfections. We cannot grow as individuals until we can find peace in who we are, whether it’s through the acceptance of God’s love, through other religious practices, or through meditative, philosophic, or therapeutic exercises. This weekend, I encourage you all to take a moment to consider what behaviors might be obstructing your own path toward becoming your best self, then create a plan to clear your way.

Happy Easter, and God Bless!

KellyGram – Rideshare Safety

Recently, my wife and I began using ridesharing, never thinking twice before climbing into our Uber or Lyft. However, in the wake of the tragic death of USC student Samantha Josephson, whose life was stolen two weeks ago by a man she believed to be her Uber driver, the potential dangers associated with ridesharing have garnered national attention. Recent investigations have revealed that assaults by rideshare drivers and persons posing as rideshare drivers occur with alarming frequency. And across the country, university and community leaders are spearheading campaigns to promote safe rideshare practices by passengers, drivers, and companies such as Uber and Lyft.

This week, State Legislature passed a bill to enact the Samantha L. Josephson Ridesharing Safety Act, which will require all rideshare vehicles to display illuminated signs. The purpose of the act is to make it easier for passengers to identify their ride; however, the Legislature still cautions that, while the new law will assist in the ride-verification process, passengers should continue to adhere to other safety protocols recommended by Uber and Lyft.

There is no greater loss to society than the death of a young person with a promising future. Had she been afforded the opportunity, Samantha Josephson would have graduated from USC in May and gone on to pursue her JD at Drexel Law School on a full scholarship. Though her dreams of being an advocate have regretfully been extinguished, I pray that Samantha’s family, friends, and loved ones can find some peace in knowing that her story alerted our entire nation to the unspoken dangers of ridesharing and inspired better safety practices that will undoubtedly save the lives of many others in years to come.

Please keep Samantha’s legacy alive by paying heed to ridesharing safety guidelines and sharing them with others to help prevent future tragedies.

Sincerely,

Mike Kelly

KellyGram – Work-Life Balance

Last week, I had an interesting conversation with my young associate attorney/marketing manager, Jamie Smith, about the necessity of work-life balance and the impact that rest has on productivity and job performance. We discussed a podcast she’d listened to recently, describing how performance in the modern workplace is often measured by how many hours an employee works as opposed to the employee’s actual production, causing employees to sacrifice vacations, family commitments, or personal interests in order to log more time at work. This trend has resulted in an unanticipated—albeit unsurprising—paradox: people who work less are generally more productive and perform better than individuals who work around the clock.

Afterward, Jamie thanked me for assessing performance based on work product instead of work hours and for cultivating a working environment that promotes a balanced lifestyle. But the truth is, I have subscribed to the notion that she described for many years now—working hours, like most anything, are governed by the law of diminishing returns. Back in the earlier days of my practice, I generally worked seven days a week, day and night—I distinctly remember being in my office every Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon for many years. It was only after I realized the toll that my constant working had on my personal life that I took measures to achieve a more reasonable balance between work and play.

When I began reducing my hours in the office, I didn’t see any real reduction in my productivity. I had more energy and enthusiasm for my work and realized that stretching myself thin was not necessarily the best way to serve my clients. In fact, these days, my work week is about 40 hours, which leaves plenty of time for other activities, including physical exercise, spending time with family and friends, going to sporting events, and every now and again, a round of golf. Yet, I am still able to manage a considerable case-load and maintain a track record of favorable results for my clients.

If you’re working too much, experiencing burnout, or sacrificing your well-being for your job, I encourage you to take a step back and reassess how you’re allocating your time. As it turns out, sometimes the best way to get ahead is to take a break!

Have a great weekend!
