Lisa Long Cotten is an attorney at the Mike Kelly Law Group in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. Affectionately referred to by her co-workers as "the voice of reason", Lisa concentrates her practice areas on Social Security Disability, Workers' Compensation and Personal Injury. Lisa is a native of Eastover, South Carolina where she attended Webber Elementary School. Lisa graduated from Lower Richland High School in 1991 and attended the University of South Carolina graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science (Magna Cum Laude) in 1995. She went on to earn a Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1998. Lisa was admitted to practice law in the State of South Carolina that same year.
Lisa began her legal career at Carolina Regional Legal Services in Florence, South Carolina. She also proudly served as an Assistant Solicitor for the Ninth Judicial Circuit in Charleston, South Carolina. Lisa made the transition to private practice in 2003 becoming a partner in the first African-American female law firm in Charleston County. Lisa was also an adjunct professor at Trident Technical College in the area of Criminal Law. Lisa returned to Richland County in 2007, when she joined the Mike Kelly Law Group.
During her legal career, Lisa has been involved in numerous professional and community service organizations. Lisa is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She was also duly inducted into Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society as an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina. She is an alumnus of Leadership Columbia Class of 2010. Lisa is also involved in numerous committees of the South Carolina Bar Association including the Workers' Compensation Section, Law Related Education Committee, South Carolina Women Lawyers Association and South Carolina Black Lawyers Association. Lisa is the current Fifth Judicial Circuit Co-Chair of the Resolution of Fee Disputes Board, which is charged with resolving fee disputes between attorneys and their clients. Lisa is a member of the Richland County Bar Association and the American Bar Association, and has been appointed to the South Carolina Bar Foundation Board of Directors. She is also admitted to practice law before the United States District Court-District of South Carolina.
